Amiibos! Come get’em

Wow, these look a lot more detailed than I expected! Nintendo’s first line of interactive figures will feature 12 characters, each selling for $12.99 this holiday season. Wii U games like Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi’s Wooly World will support the figures, as will other upcoming titles — the 3DS will eventually connect with them too using an NFC accessory or the new 3DS’s built-in support.

You can preorder all of the figures right now on Amazon. We’ve also got more photos after the break. I like how the colored lines in the Amiibo logo are the same as the ones on the *new* 3DS logo.

Xenoblade leads the way in splitting 3DS userbase ⊟

Along with announcing new hardware this morning (special edition new 3DS XLs for Smash Bros. and Monster Hunter 4G also snuck out this morning), Nintendo announced a 3DS port for acclaimed Wii RPG Xenoblade.

Xenoblade is the first announced title that will take advantage of the new 3DS models’ improved CPU — meaning it won’t be playable on the older 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS systems. The situation is similar to the DSi, which received DSi-only games that older DSes couldn’t run. I remember quite a bit of confusion and anger over how that was handled..

I’m all for games like Xenoblade that take advantage of the increased capabilities in what’s effectively a new system, but not everyone’s happy to see the 3DS userbase split. Frequent Tiny Cartridge contributor Daniel Feit justified his annoyance by pointing out that handheld lifespans are getting shorter: “Game Boy to Game Boy Color: 9 years. Nintendo DS to DSi: 4 years. Nintendo 3DS to *new* 3DS: 3.5 years.”
